Class Description

Story and Stretch is a class where yoga and Afrikan folklore are combined. We will begin each class with a story from the Afrikan Diaspora and, through yoga, connect our bodies to what our minds have absorbed in the stories. Students will also learn various breathing techniques.

Class Skills Development

By the end of the class, the students will have immersion in folklore like Anansi, Brer Rabbit, Brer Bear, stories by Virginia Hamilton, etc. These wonderful stories will guide us through a journey of centering, meditation, and yoga. By the end of the class the students will have breathing techniques and asanas connected to our beloved folktales, as well as a deeper appreciation for our stories throughout the Diaspora. 

Class Materials 

• Comfortable clothing that students can move in • A yoga mat or a woven yoga rug 

Class Norms 

Respect for the instructor, classmates, and self is important. Students also need to be patient with themselves and be open to trying new things. • Parents should be in the ear reach of the class, in case your student needs some assistance. Parents and younger siblings are welcome to participate in class. 

About the Instructor 

My name is Adia Blackmon Shabazz. I am a singer, healer and sewist. I am a 200hr trained yoga teacher in the Kripalu tradition. I'm a licensed minister and an initiated traditional Akan priest.
